Rommel’s Wolf hoping to replicate strong last start win at Port Macquarie

Rommel’s Wolf may be by one of the more unfashionable sires, but he is out to prove to everyone watching Monday’s feature Port Macquarie meeting that his slashing first-up win was no flash in the pan.

Having not raced for nearly eight months, the lightly performed three-year-old instantly became a Coffs Harbour favourite when he roared home to win a maiden fresh at this track only 13 days ago.

The ex-Victorian hadn’t started since last October when beaten a long way on the synthetic track at Pakenham in just his second outing.

But he was moved on, and soon after headed north to the popular Brad Munro stable at Coffs where he was given plenty of time to acclimatise.

Taken along slowly in track work, and with plenty of gear tinkering, Rommel’s Wolf finally stepped out for his first run on turf, and duly exploded home from near last to beat a handy field over 1000m.

He now steps up a furlong further in a stronger Class 1 to close the meeting, locking horns with another impressive and fresh maiden winner in provincial filly Equivocal, while four-year-old Assiduity second-up is also expected to command market support.

Rommel’s Wolf is by the Commands stallion Rommel who while based in Western Australia carved out a brief but smart sprint and middle-distance career.

In the 2014-15 season, Rommel won both the Group 2 WA Guineas over a mile, and Group 3 Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield over 1200m.

But with a very modest service fee by today’s standards, Rommel’s breeding value can get a real boost if Rommel’s Wolf continues to take the NSW country scene by storm. And he might be part of a big day for Coffs trainers heading down the road on Monday.

The Brett Bellamy stable has talented and progressive four-year-old Jamesonheart tackling a good quality Benchmark 74 Hcp over 1200m second-up.
